To meditate is to turn inward; to concentrate on the inner self.

A common misperception about meditation is that it is used to turn off your thoughts, or make your mind blank. Not true.

Yes, inner calm and quiet is achieved through meditation, but not by turning off thoughts. Quietening of the mind comes naturally from the effectiveness of the meditation method used and an uplifting of spiritual energy that is beyond your own efforts.

If we practice meditation, our mind will gradually become more and more peaceful, and we will experience a purer form of happiness. Perhaps, instead, we could refer to it as being more 'grounded' within ourselves. And with a solid sense of grounding, we experience clarity, and an inner space that enables us to control our mind regardless of external circumstances. Gradually, we develop mental equilibrium - a balanced mind that is grounded all the time, rather than an unbalanced mind that oscillates between extremes of excitement and despondency.

Nowadays, meditation is becoming invaluable for finding a peaceful oasis of relaxation and stress relief in a demanding, fast-paced world. Some practice meditation for healing, others for emotional cleansing and balancing, or to deepen concentration and insight. Still others develop a practice to manifest change in their lives, or as a way to develop intuition, unlock creativity, explore alternate realities, or find inner guidance.

The benefits of meditation are many - for both the individual who practices, and those around her. With a secure mind, the meditator can rise above the superficiality of everyday problems; the ability to better understand the true causes of problems affecting people and the environment will arise.

The self-discipline that comes naturally from the practice will produce effects which spread to improve the quality of life for society at large.


Don't be too serious or try too hard. Maintain 'light' attention and an open mind. There is no way it has to go. Oh yes... and remember... breathe!
